Aesthetic

The Spotify algorithms recognized it before I did, but I’ve now become conscious of the fact that one of my main musical aesthetics is electronica that sounds influenced by 80s music and video game soundtracks.

Honestly, that’s kind of hilarious to me because I wasn’t allowed to listen to 80s music in the 80s, and didn’t get many opportunities to play console games in either the 80s or 90s. Apparently the exposure had an outsized influence.

If this niche sounds like your niche, too, allow me to recommend a few artists that can be found on Spotify:

Dance With The Dead
Ginger Runner
Kebu
Laserdance
STARFORCE
STARLYTE

Also, the Crypt of the Necrodancer soundtrack.

Some of these are personal favorites and some just fit the aesthetic well. I’m combining them into a big playlist and it’s going to make awesome music for driving.

Amusing anecdote related to this: when I was around 15 or 16 one of my sisters brought home the Pure Moods CD. It had a song on there that put me into a state resembling transcendent wonder – while listening it was as if I could see new worlds unfolding in my imagination, and it made me itch for out-of-this-world adventures. It was the most magical song young me had ever heard.

What was said song? A version of Crockett’s Theme from Miami Vice. 🤣

I really love how music has such an individual and subjective effect on the listener.
